The 57th Street Incinerator and Garage project included a four-building facility owned by the NYC Department of Sanitation. The site stretches south along the West Side Highway between 55th and 57th Streets. The 56th Street overpass, as well as 11 steel trusses that were suspended 75 ft. over the roadway below, were also demolished. Because of potential danger to motorists and pedestrians, hand demolition of this 300-ft. concrete and steel overpass was performed on weekends. Netting and wood barriers were also attached to the underside of the overpass to prevent spillage of debris onto the roadway. The structures were safely demolished in 7 months with a crew of 15 to 20 men.
The cleared site will be used for a new Sanitation Department facility and will make way for the construction of a new park at the northern end of Hudson River Park.
